G. pinetis is characterized by its medium size and reddish-brown to grayish-brown coloration. The upper incisors have two distinct grooves. Skull morphology, particularly the shape of the incisors and auditory bullae, is important for distinguishing this species. Total length can range from 200-280 mm.
Range
G. pinetis is found in the southeastern Coastal Plain, from South Carolina south through Georgia and Florida, and west into Alabama and southeastern Mississippi.
Habitat
G. pinetis prefers well-drained sandy soils in longleaf pine forests, sandhills, and other sandy habitats of the southeastern Coastal Plain.
Similar species
G. pinetis is generally distinct within its range. However, careful comparison of cranial characteristics is important if there is any doubt, especially in areas where its range approaches that of other Geomys species.
