This is a small tree squirrel with a dark brown to olive-brown coat. It has a dark stripe along its sides, bordered by a lighter stripe, though these can be less distinct in winter. The underside is typically orange-reddish. The tail is relatively short and bushy.
Range
T. douglasii is found in the Pacific Northwest, including parts of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California.
Habitat
It is primarily found in coniferous forests, especially those containing Douglas-fir, western hemlock, and various pine species.
Similar species
T. douglasii is similar to Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, but T. hudsonicus is generally more reddish and has a more uniform reddish underside. It also shares range with Tamiasciurus fremonti in a limited area, but T. fremonti is typically lighter in color.
