How to identify
The Dryophytes Andersonii is about 1-3 inches in length making it one of the smaller species of treefrogs. Individuals belonging to this species are mainly green with wide and black stripes. On the hidden surfaces of their legs are orange-gold markings and they usually have large toe pads. What distinguishes the Pine Barrens from similar treefrogs is the lavender stripe bordered with white coloration on each side of its body.
Range
The location of the Pine Barrens Treefrog is the Southeastern United Sates. This includes areas such as the New Jersey Pine Barrens; the Florida panhandle and southern Alabama, the sandhills of North and South Carolina.
Habitat
Pine Barrens Treefrog is commonly found near wetlands that accumulates peat in brushy areas, areas covered with thick moss. Adult Dryophytes Andersonii are usually terrestrial but can be also found near sources of water. The females lay eggs in shallow, acidic ponds as they are not hampered by the low pH levels. The ideal pH level being between 3.8 and 5.9. The Pine Barrens Treefrog feed on beetles, flies, grasshoppers and ants.
Similar species
Dryophytes Gratiosus or barking treefrog is considered to be the largest treefrog in the United States with a length of 2-2.8 inches. It is easily recognizable owing to the characteristic dark markings on its dorsum. Dryophytes Avivocaor Bird-voiced treefrog is usually 2 inches long with a dappled pale-grey or brown dorsal surface. the bird-voiced treefrog has a brown cross-shaped mark on its back. Dryophytes Versicolor or arboreal frog has the ability to camouflage from grey to green depending on the substrate where they are sitting.
Name and etymology
Andersonii: Named after Anderson, South Carolina where the holotype specimen was described. Although its likely this species never occurred there.
