How to identify
Elongated body, up to 4 ft. long, with four diminutive legs with two toes at the end of each limb. Distinguished from other species of Amphiuma by the number of toes and overall largest size of the three species. Dark in color, ranging from grey to black with lighter shades on ventral side of body.
Range
Found in the coastal plains of the eastern United States, from southeastern Virginia to eastern Louisiana & Florida
Habitat
Semi-Aquatic. Found throughout low to no current fresh water creeks & small rivers, forested wetlands & riparian zones, occasionally benthic, often uses crayfish burrows. May be found terrestrially during rainy weather, often under objects at shoreline.
Variations
Color varies from grey to black. Other Amphiuma species can be distinguished by differing number of toes, either one or three, on each leg.
