How to identify

With a height of 1-1.5 inches, the Hyla Femoralis is tan, green, grey or brown and can have markings of irregular bands that re dark in color. The underneath thighs are a distinct orange spots or could also be whitish yellow. Similar to other species, the pine woods treefrog has enlarged and sticky toepads.

Range

This species is found in the Southeastern United States on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts plains, ranging from Virginia to Florida.

Habitat

The Pine Woods Treefrog are found mostly in Florida excluding South-Central Peninsula and the Keys. Oak forest, pine flatwoods and trees in sandhill is their common habitat. Breeding takes place in marshes, bayheads and ditches where the females lay 100-250 eggs on vegetation just below the surface of the water. Small invertebrates in general are the feeds of the Hyla Femoralis, ants, beetles and flies inclusive.

Similar species

Dryophytes Cinereus or New World treefrog is medium-sized with a height up to 2.5 inches long. Their skin color ranges from bright yellowish-olive to lime green and is dependent on lightning or temperature. Dryophytes Arenicolor or Canyon treefrog grows up to 2.0-2.2 inches in length. The Canyon Treefrogs are typically brown in color or grey-green with dark colored marks. Dryophytes Squirellus or Squirrel treefrog is usually 1.5 inches in length and green in color although they may vary with shades of yellow or brown.
