This species is easily identified by its bright orange or yellow belly while their backs vary from dark orange to brownish-black color on top. Their eyes are pale and their tails are long and while their skin is covered in little bumps.
Range
This Newt species has a coastal distribution from Alaska to California and is found in damp woodlands, grasslands and near swamps and wetlands. They are mostly found underneath leaves, logs and in dark damp areas close to rivers.
Habitat
The Rough-skinned Newt is found in damp areas including, marshlands, grasslands, woodlands, and swamps. Their preferred habitats are dark damp places usually under logs, leaves and organic matter.
Variations
This species can vary in color from blackish- brown, reddish-brown to light brown in color on top and yellow or orange below.
