Adult length from 0.75-1.5 inches from snout to vent. Dorsal coloration occurs in shades of brown, gray, olive, or green with black spots. Dark stripes run laterally down spine. Distinguishing dark stripe runs thru eye with a dark bar beneath the eye. Lack a continuous line on upper lip.
Range
South-central United States. Range extends north to Illinois and south to Mexico border in Texas, east to the Mississippi River and West to central Texas.
Habitat
Terrestrial during breeding season or when feeding, fossorial at all other times. Habitats include woods, prairies, streams, swamps, and ponds.
Variations
Males: Throat color becomes darker during breeding season.
