Adult length of 0.75 to 1.25 inches from snout to vent. Dorsal coloration occurs in shades of light or dark brown, grey, or greenish. White line runs along upper lip and often extends to shoulder. Dark stripe runs from snout, thru eyes and continues down lateral side of body. Underbelly is white in color with dark speckles on chest.
Range
Central United States, east of the Mississippi River. Range extends north from Michigan and southern Ontario down to Tennessee. East to the Appalachian Mountains and west into Illinois.
Habitat
Terrestrial during feeding or breeding season, fossorial at all other times. Found in damp, open areas such as marshes, meadows, fields, forest edges, and floodplains.
Variations
Males: During breeding season, throats are dark in color.
