Range
Southewestern Canada to Northern Mexico. Throughout the Western United States to Texas.
Habitats
Terrestrial as adults, juveniles entirely aquatic. Grasslands, lowland forests, fields, and woodlands.
Identification
Typical adult length is 6-9 inches long but can grow to up to 12 inches. Broad head with a thick body. Color is variable, depending on locality. Background color typically dark with lighter spots of yellow, green, or tan.
