Range
Found through the central plains of the United States, into Mexico. Range as far west as Oregon, east to Missouri, south into Mexico, and North to Montana.
Habitats
Found at altitudes as high as 8,000 ft in meadows, still freshwater bodies, riparian zones, and woodlands near rivers & streams.
Identification
Robust body with adult length up to 5 inches. Prominent cranial crests between and in front of eyes. Dorsal side greyish brown in color, occasionally yellowish-brown, with small dark speckles. Narrow line running length of body on dorsal side, occurs in pale colorations. Vent side pale without markings.
