Range
Two distinct populations in east coast of the United States Northern population occurs in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, & New York. Southern population is found in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee.
Habitats
Semi-aquatic. Found in mountain bogs and meadow streams. Prefer cool, clear, slow moving, muddy bottomed, fresh water habitats.
Identification
Smallest turtle found in the United States. Maximum adult carapace length is 4.5 inches. Dark body and carapace color with lighter colored growth rings around scutes. Distinguishing large patches of orange on sides of head behind eyes. Plastron is cream colored with black patches.
